How confident do you feel about your ability to identify claims in a text? What was the easiest part of today's activity, and what did you find challenging? Explain how today's lesson helped you better understand the difference between a claim and other statements an author might make.

Response:  I feel somewhat confident about my ability to identify claims in a text. The easiest part of today's activity was annotating the text. Something I found challenging was categorizing the claims. Today's lesson helped me better understand the difference between a claim and other statements because I now know that an argument has to be refutable. Other statements however, are not. Absent

If you could change one rule at school, at home, or in society, what would it be? Using a claim of policy, make an argument for why that rule should change, using at least two reasons to support your claim.

Response: If I could change one rule at school it would be to allow us to use our phones. This rule should change because phones can be a vital tool in the classroom. Lots of student learn differently, and phones have access to resources that many student may need to understand lessons effectively. Phones also allow for greater communication. For example, it's important that students are able to contact their friends and family when needed. Summary: Today we watched various ads and identified the different strategies used to make the argument in the video effective. Reflection: I thought that this lesson was fun. It gave me a new perspective on how ads are made and why they have an impact.

Think about a time when someone challenged your opinion or told you that you were wrong. What was the disagreement about, and how did you defend yourself? Did you change their mind, or did they change yours?

Response: A time someone challenged my opinion was when me and my parents argued over whether or not we should get another dog. I said that we should because I would help take care of it, and having a dog in the house would make it feel more lively. My parents argued that a dog was too much work, especially a puppy. Ultimately, we landed on a compromise. We did get a dog, but she was already 2 years old, solving both of our problems. Summary : Today we learned about different types of arguments. We also learned about the different factors that take part in the effectiveness of an argument. Reflection: I thought that the lesson was informative, however I learned most of the content in middle school.

Describe a time when someone’s words had a lasting impact on you.

Response:  A time someone's words had a lasting impact on me was when my Aunt told me a story about her search for a major in college. She said that she had always wanted to do something in medicine and be a nurse. She then explains how she met a nurse and asked her about whether or not she liked her job. The nurse explained that she loved her job and was very passionate about what she does, however "when she comes home at night and her 5 year old daughter is crying, she says the nanny's name and not hers." This stuck with me because it really made me think about my values in life especially as I'm trying to figure out what I want to do in the future. Summary:  Today we worked on our blog post and identified the literary devices that we used in our poem. Reflection: I thought that today was a good day to have because a lot of our classes gave us time to work on whatever we need to work on because of our short class periods.

Today, you had the opportunity to express yourself through poetry. Reflect on your creative writing process. What did you find most enjoyable or challenging about turning your thoughts into a poem? Did this assignment change the way you think about poetry or creative writing? Explain your experience.

Response: I have never been very good at creative writing so I found this assignment difficult. I'm used to writing very literally so it was hard for me to use figurative language. I also found the time limit to be my biggest issue because it was taking me a while to come up with ideas. I did however think it was fun because I don't write stuff like that very often. It changed my perspective on poetry because it made me realize how much thought goes into writing each line and how small changes can alter the text entirely. Summary:  Today we wrote our own poem using given topics. We used guidelines to construct the poem and give it a deeper theme. Reflection:  I was overall very proud of my poem because I typically find writing poetry very difficult.

Write about a moment when you had to step out of your comfort zone.

Response: A time I had to step out of my comfort zone was when I had to present for my AP Research class. I really don't like public speaking and this was a particularly long presentation. I was also especially scared because it was a part of my AP exam. I practiced a lot beforehand until I felt confident. When it was time to present I was still very scared but it went much better than anticipated. Absent

Talk about a time when you had to write a poem, whether it was for an assignment, event, or special occasion. What was the writing process like for you, and were you proud of the finished product?

Response:  A time I had to write a poem was in 8th grade during our poetry unit. Every morning we had a prompt and had to speed write a poem then read it to the class. I found writing poetry difficult because I wasn't sure how to structure it. I also found that my poetry was often very literal and didn't follow the common figurative language used in most poetry. Overall I was usually proud of the finished product, however I am not super confident in my poetry writing abilities. Summary: Today we read a poem comparing poetry to an acrobat walking on a tightrope. The poem talking about the absurdity involved in writing a poem, and how it was similar to the dangers of performing on a tightrope. Reflection: I thought that the poem was very interesting and I liked the worksheet that helped break it down. I usually have difficulty understanding poetry, but I felt like I understood this one pretty well.
